Facial Palsy Physiotherapy

At Thrive Health Group, we understand how facial palsy can affect not only your physical function but also your confidence and emotional wellbeing. Our goal is to provide compassionate, evidence-based care that helps you recover movement, symmetry, and expression.

What Is Facial Palsy?

Facial palsy refers to weakness or paralysis of the facial muscles due to damage to the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII). This nerve controls facial expressions, eye closure, and other vital functions. When impaired, patients may experience drooping, difficulty smiling, blinking, or speaking clearly.

What types of conditions do you treat?

We provide care for individuals experiencing facial palsy due to peripheral nerve involvement—where the facial nerve itself has been affected. This includes conditions such as Bell’s Palsy and Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, among others.

At this time, we do not treat facial palsy resulting from central nervous system causes, such as brain or brainstem injuries (e.g. stroke, multiple sclerosis).

What to Expect in a Physiotherapy Assessment

Your initial consultation includes:

  • Detailed history taking – to understand onset, symptoms, and medical background

  • Facial muscle testing – assessing strength, symmetry, and movement patterns

  • Functional impact review – including speech, eating, eye protection, and emotional expression

  • TMJ and cervical spine screening – to identify contributing factors or co-existing dysfunctions

  • Goal setting – tailored to your lifestyle, recovery stage, and personal priorities

Physiotherapy Treatment for Facial Palsy

Our treatment approach is gentle, progressive, and personalized. It may include:

  • Facial neuromuscular retraining – using mirror feedback, guided movement, and graded exercises

  • Massage and manual therapy – to reduce stiffness, improve circulation, and support symmetry

  • TMJ management – addressing jaw alignment, muscle tension, and bite function

  • Eye care strategies – for blinking, lubrication, and protection

  • Education and home program – empowering you with tools for daily practice and recovery
